Chapter 30

“W

hat was the problem?” Dominic asked.

“We don’t have a vehicle registration for the BMW. They think we stole it! We need you to bail us out. Can you come?”

“Of course,” said the priest, well-knowing the gypsies did steal the car a few months back, so they couldn’t possibly have the registration. “How far away is Marburg?”

“It only took us an hour to get here, which is why they pulled me over. I guess I was speeding…”

“See you in about ninety minutes. Stay put until then.”

“As if we have a choice,” Milosh said glumly, looking at the cell awaiting him next to the grimy wall phone.

Dominic turned to the others, explaining the new development as he donned his black shirt and clerical collar.

“Karl, can I use your car while you guys wait here?”

“Well, you’re not going without me,” Hana said firmly. Dominic nodded.

“Sure, Michael,” Dengler said, tossing him the keys. “Lukas and I will be here for you. You should be back in three or four hours, I imagine, so we’ll extend the room for the day.”

“Just keep that veil secure. Put it in the room safe or something.”

“It’s fine in my backpack. Lukas and I can handle ourselves if it comes to that.”

“Alright, see you soon.”

Dominic and Hana took off in the Jeep, heading south for the Gothic city of Marburg, Germany.

Sitting in the rented black Mercedes G-Class SUV, still in the parking lot of Wewelsburg Castle, Jacob Rausch had spent the past thirty minutes combing area hotels for a guest registered as Father Michael Dominic. Büren being a small town, there weren’t that many to call, and he finally found his quarry at Hotel Walz in the nearby burg of Salzkotten. The clerk said Dominic was still checked in.

Turning to Jäger, who was at the wheel, Rausch gave him the address. “Paderborner Strasse 21, about fifteen minutes away.”

“Karl, are you hungry? I’m starving,” Lukas said to his partner. “Why don’t I get us a couple currywurst from that truck down the street?”

“Mmm, yeah,” his mouth watering at the thought of the traditional German street food. “Get some extra curried ketchup, too. And a couple Cokes.”

“Breakfast of champions! You’re on. Back in a bit,” Lukas said as he grabbed his key card and left the room.

As he walked away from the hotel, Lukas paid no attention to the black SUV pulling into the parking lot.

Taking a spot beneath a thick green alder tree, Jäger shut the engine off while Jacob, phone in hand, called the hotel, asking to be put through to Father Dominic’s room. The operator made the connection, and Dengler answered the phone.

“Yes?”

“Good morning, sir. This is room service, just confirming that your breakfast order will be up shortly.”

“But, we didn’t order room service!” Karl said.

“Is this not Room 237?” Rausch asked.

“No, it’s 224. You’ve got the wrong room.”

“My apologies for the intrusion, sir. Have a good morning.” Rausch disconnected the call.

“Alright, they’re in 224. Let’s go.”

The four men—Jacob, Christof, Jäger and Günther—got out of the SUV and made their way into the hotel, taking the stairs to the upper floor.
